BROTHERS OF THE SUN MC WYOMING
RIDE FOR DOWN/INJURED BIKERS
Rock Springs, Wyoming On Saturday May 1st, 2004, The Brothers Of The Sun Motorcycle
Club Wyoming Chapter held its first event since the forming of the chapter. This event was called the WYOMING RIDE FOR DOWN
/ INJURED BIKERS and was the beginning of what is to become a national effort and event designed to create an emergency fund
to help with medical expenses and other needs should a biker get hurt riding on our highways.
While the numbers for
participants as well as money taken in were small by comparison to other events held by longer established clubs in other
areas of the country, the members of this newly formed chapter considered the event to be a huge success.
Considering
that Wyoming is the least populated state in the Union and the fact that the Suns Club was limited to only publicizing this
event locally (Rock Springs has a population of approximately 20,000 people), coupled with the fact that this chapter has
only existed since November of 2003, with over 80 local businesses contributing and donating items to be raffled off and over
600 raffle tickets sold, the Suns feel that they achieved a major milestone.
On Sunday, May 16th, 2004, the members
of this chapter as well as several members from Chariots of Light Christian Bikers and Christian Motorcycle Association, along
with several independent riders from the Rock Springs motorcycling community gathered at a local biker-friendly church. Following
services, along with a police escort provided by a supervisor with the local police department, they rode a mile and a half
to visit with a young man by the name of Doug Knight. Doug purchased a brand new HD Sportster last year and had less than
50 miles on it when he was hit by an uninsured drunk driver and paralyzed from the neck down.
As the motorcade arrived
at Doug's house their escort hit the sirens and all the riders revved their engines. The noise was deafening but beautiful
at the same time. Doug's wife knew the club was coming by but had no idea that many people were going to fill their street
or of the events to follow. She kept the whole thing a secret from Doug, only telling him that he had some visitors coming
by to see him.
Doug and his entire family were pleasantly surprised when TAZ and LAW, the President and Vice President
of the Brothers of the Sun presented Doug with a certified check in the amount of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) and an
honorary lifetime membership in this chapter. What made this even more special was the fact that Doug and his family had never
met any of us before this day.
Before leaving, everybody present personally gave Doug a hug and a prayer was lead
by Gene Emerson of Chariots of Light for a rapid recovery for our injured brother. Doug was brought down to the front of the
pack and had his photo taken amidst an entire street filled with motorcycles. Doug then surprised all by stating that even
though the doctors had informed him that he would never walk again, he proudly showed off a minor sunburn he received and
stated that he could actually feel pain in the area affected. This statement brought cheers from all present and was not the
only surprise as Doug then readjusted his sitting position in his wheel chair by himself and showed all that he has regained
some limited motor control.
Doug has requested that at some time later this year, if it is possible he would like
to be taken on a ride with one of his new brothers.
None of the members of the Wyoming Chapter has a side car or a
trike so if any reader can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated by the Brothers Of The Sun MC, and by Doug and
his family.
Doug plans to one day be able to pilot a bike again (he is interested in sometime in the future purchasing
a trike). We have no doubt that he will achieve this.
